The Edmonton Police Association (EPA) is the Association behind the men and women that serve as sworn officers of the Edmonton Police Service.
Today the EPA has many responsibilities, the core of which is the collective bargaining on behalf of members and the legal representation of members. Be sure to read our history to see how the EPA has evolved over time.

What we do
As we review the history of Edmonton, it is difficult to visualize that in 1892, two small communities were vying to outdo each other in growth and importance. Strathcona lay on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River and Edmonton graced the north banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Although the Dominion of Canada Land office was in Edmonton, Strathcona utilized every possible method to lure the Dominion Land office to the south side of the river. The feud between these two communities made it necessary to establish a “Police Force”, as it was known then, to keep the peace.
The devolvement of the “Police Force” also brought about the normal human resource, labour and contractual issues as they are known today. In an attempt to resolve them, the City of Edmonton Policeman’s Association was formed to strictly be a bargaining agent for serving Police Officers.

On October 17, 1918, while investigating an armed robbery near the Northern Hotel, 97 Street and 102 Avenue, Constable Beevers was confronted by a suspect who shot him and fled. Constable Beevers died a short time later.

October 17, 1918On August 30, 1919, Constable Nixon was walking his beat near 104 Avenue and 101 Street, and approached a suspicious man loitering by the Twin City Transfer Company. When questioned, the stranger pulled a revolver from his jacket, opened fire and fled. Constable Nixon died in hospital.

August 30, 1919On December 5, 1949, while attempting to start a stalled police vehicle at 106 Street and Princess Elizabeth Avenue, Constable Vaughan fell and struck his head. He died 27 hours later.
On December 16, 1950, after quelling a drunken brawl at the Arrow Café, 10245- 96 Street, Detective Arial suffered a heart attack in the Criminal Investigation Division office. He passed away in hospital 2 hours later.
During a violent windstorm on May 8, 1955, Constable Donnelly was dispatched to a call of a downed power line on Saskatchewan Drive and 102 Street. He was electrocuted when he came in contact with a 4000-volt power line.
On November 24, 1956, Constable Romano, driving to a domestic dispute complaint, collided with a truck travelling on the wrong side of the Mill Creek Bridge east of 96 Street on Whyte Avenue. Constable Romano was killed instantly.
On July 2, 1959, Sergeant Jack died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision. While on route to a fire alarm at the Capital City Box Company, the police vehicle in which he was a passenger was struck at 93 Street and 104 Avenue by a fire truck responding to the same alarm.

July 2, 1959On December 4, 1978, following a weight lifting training session in the police gymnasium, Detective Henderson suffered a heart attack and died.
Det. Ross HENDERSON
December 4, 1978Constable Faraone stopped a suspect vehicle fleeing the scene of a bank robbery on June 25, 1990. While attempting to arrest the only visible suspect in the vehicle, the driver, Constable Faraone was shot and killed by a second suspect hiding in the back seat. He died instantly. At 33 years of age, constable Faraone was committed to his family, his work, and his community.

June 25, 1990Constable Woodall, along with other members of the EPS, were attempting to arrest an individual at a west end residence on June 8th, 2015. The suspect refused to exit the residence and the Feeney warrant was authorized. As the team was forcing the front door, the suspect opened fire from within, killing Cst. Woodall instantly. The rest of the team were pinned down as the suspect fired numerous rounds. Later on he set fire to the residence and committed suicide. Constable Woodall was a proud member of the policing profession and a dedicated husband and father.
